Project: New Doctor's Office
Client: Suburban Healthcare Associates
Location: Plainfield, IL
Case Study: Suburban Healthcare
Challenge: In need of a new, primary location to accommodate patients and personnel, leaders at Suburban Healthcare expressed their desires for a facility that emphasizes comfort and convenience. In working together, we achieved the goal.
Solution: The exterior of the facility features durable, earth-toned brick and stone. Individual windows of different shapes combine with the use of awnings to bring the scale of the building’s main facade down to a more human level. An entry canopy sized to accommodate emergency vehicles provides patients with shelter from the elements as they are dropped off and picked up by their caretakers.
From the moment you enter the lobby waiting area it is clear the space was designed to embrace two distinct medical practices, pediatrics and internal medicine. A water feature that provides calming natural sounds for both adults and children waiting for appointments divides the separate check-in areas.
The building’s interior surfaces are treated with warm colors and soft curves that create a friendly, less-sterile environment. The flooring color and patterns guide patients through the space, from the waiting area to the lab and on to the exam rooms. The facility’s exam rooms are grouped together in suites with uniquely colored skylights that distinguish pediatric rooms from adult areas. Blending the use of windows, indirect lighting, and art work on the ceilings of these rooms also contributes to the “friendly,’ patient-focused feeling. As a cohesive and comfortable facility, this setting reflects the type of care that its clinicians provide.
